Yamaha 4 cyl extreme problems! help!
Hey Guys im new to the forum and am dire need of help,
My 1987 Yamaha golf cart, while reliable most of the time, has begun to sh*t the bed. I was using it at work, pulling a trailer and seeding lease sites, where it started to work real crappy. Which is weird because I have never had a problem. It had problems getting started from a stop, you had to help spin the primary clutch to get the thing running. So as such, i thought the battery was dead. long story short, battery is fine and i rebuilt the starter and now there is no issues with that. HOWEVER, for some reason the motor is messed now (and it was like this before i messed with the starter). Basically, the intake side of the motor is blowing out (fuel coming the wrong way out of the carb) and when on the throttle the exhaust side is sucking air in. This mottor is working exactly backwards to what it should be. I cant figure this out?!?! all i can think of is that the timing jumped 180 degrees or something and now it is working backwards. Can anyone help me?!?!? im stuck and out of ideas. Thanks guys, |

I had the same problem with mine you have two wires crossed on the starter and it is turning the motor over backwards. I argued with myself that there was no way cause I wired it back exactly the way I pulled it to change the brushes but at the end of alot of troublesooting that was the problem.

Thanks for the help, I suspected this last night so I tried to swap the power and ground wires on the starter but it still spun the same way. Ill look at this some more but Im glad to hear you had a similar problem and got it fixed. Here's to hoping... thanks for the help

If you search on here there is a diagram of exactly how it should be wired. It took someone pointing out to me that blowing out the carb and a vacuum on the exhaust proved that it was spinning backwards. If I find it I'll link it here but just search for starter wiring

Go to my profile and look up the thread g8 motor not firing up. The wiring was posted by smallblock on how it should be. That is the thread I posted when I had the exact same problem. Hope it helps
