98 EZGO TXT Series model = No Power

Hey guys, I've been surfing the site for a while and I must say it's been very informative so I hope you can help me out. Yesterday I was going to ride my golf cart for the first time in a couple of months and when I put it in reverse to back out of the garage, it sputtered a couple of times and smoke came from under the passenger side seat and now the cart will not move in forward or reverse. I checked the batteries with a voltmeter and they are fully charged and when the ignition is in the on position and I hit the gas pedal, I hear a clicking noise. I also have a battery meter and lights installed and both are working. Can anyone help me out?

Welcome to bgw.... Smoke is never a good sign.... the controller is under a cover there. Remove the environmental cover and check all connections for signs of heat or loose? If not smell the controller... if it smells like electrical burnt stuff it is likely smoked.

Is this a stock cart? If no ~ What mods?

Thanks, it's great to be here. I checked the controller and it looks and smells ok. I did notice the batteries are leaking and when I pushed the pedal this time, a spark came from one of the terminals which is probably due to the liquid. So I have a couple of questions, how do you stop the batteries from leaking and how can you tell if the controller is working? Is there a way to test?

And yes, it's pretty much stock. I did install lights and a battery meter but that's it.

Never mind guys, I figured out the problem. I was overloading my battery terminal. I moved my lights to a separate terminal and everything is working. Thanks for your help.

if your batts are leaking they have been over filled. just my .02

If topped off when not fully charged or closer than a 1/4 of an inch from the bottom of the filler tube they may over flow.

Deep cycle batteries parked (not being shaken by use) can form bubbles that do not pop to the top which can lift the water level.
