Fuel Pump Problem

Worst Case Scenario is that I'll drop it off at a small engine repair place.

As Dave says the pump may need to be primed.
You want to pour gas into the pump from the carb side output of the pump.
The engine is starving from lack of fuel.
Insure hose to tank has no restrictions and the hose is good.
If the hose has some internal breakdown it could be blocking off fuel.
Replace the fuel line also.

Poured gas in the pump last night and it ran for a bit like this Run--> Stopped and starter kicked over -> Run -Stopped and Starter kicked over repeat. I did open up the air box today on it and there's oil in that, so I am cleaning that (this is a used cart and I just got it) and there's not much inside of the Carb, but it ran before hand. It did burn a bit of oil (blue/gray smoke) so i'm wondering if the rings finally gave out on it.

Just got off the phone with a golf cart mechanic, the rings are shot and maybe the piston, he said a rebuild is a $100 with new carb. Though sad thing is I am without a cart until next week.

Wow, I was going to suggest a new gas tank cap since the vent may have been plugged.

I assume he did a compression check on this engine.

Do you know what his readings were?

The readings were 120, but there seems to be more amiss with the motor than the cap, the way he told me is that; the valve was shot, the rings were shot as well as the head, this was causing a pressure crack that was leaking oil into the crank as well as into the carb and air filter. Since this is a cart that some of the parts cost high amounts of money, it would cost more than I had to put a new engine in, so he made me a deal, Swap the Cart (I can keep the box, woo) and $500 cash for a 4 Cylinder Cart which I have to pick up tomorrow.

If pump is replaced then replace the fuel lines. This will ensure they are not collapsing or plugged. Also replace pulse line. If it only runs for a couple seconds and then craps out maybe the float isn't set properly in the carb? Tons of things to try. If yours getting 120 psi on compression there's nothing wrong with the rings and not likely the valves either. 120psi is very healthy but only a leak down would tell the truth.
