cart put in forward while going reverse...Help please

I'm looking for some advise here after my 10 year old son was riding my "restored" 89 yamaha gas g2 around the yard and decided it would be ok to put the cart in forward while still rolling in reverse. I've been a site member for years, although i don't post. I read the heck out of the posts and builds and have learned a lot from them. Well, I heard a disturbing crunch / grind noise from about 30 feet away from the poor cart when this was done. Long story short, the cart wont go forward or reverse now. I've done A LOT of work to the cart myself through-out the years and had it running great. So, where should i start looking to fix this. I can push it in both directions while its in gear now, much easier than in the past. I really haven't even looked into the problem since it happened last night being that i was a "little" pissed off about the whole situation. The secondary is spinning as it should and everything looks fine from the outside going into the differential. Should i be expecting blown gears, broken axle, or what. what do you guys think. I appreciate the help in advance.

Time to pull the rear and open it up... Could be any of the above mentioned causes.
