Default Engine 'brake' on downhills

I've got at 2008 Club Car DS that I just picked up and it seems to be missing the "hill governor".

Is there something on these year carts that allow us to have the cart hold itself back on the hills? There are a couple steep hills on the course that I need to go down, and I end up almost standing on the brakes to keep it in control. Makes it hard to have the kids drive it also as I don't want them to reach mach speed on the way down.

Default Re: Engine 'brake' on downhills

The Gas carts don't have any downhill speed control. The engine does some braking as long as it's running when you start going down the hill, and the throttle cable is adjusted properly so the throttle plate actually closes when the pedal is up. The engine has to start out running so the primary clutch is engaged on the belt.

It's possible you have a belt or clutch problem that's allowing tension to release and the primary clutch to disengage the belt. This would result in basically free-wheeling down the hill, and depending on the hill could make for a very fun ride...

Another thing to check is the adjustment of your brakes. If the shoes are worn and not adjusted properly you will not get full braking power no matter how hard you try to stand on the pedal.
