Default 2011 Transporter Charging Question

Gas transporter. I'm guessing I have a charging issue, I can run my transporter for sometime until the battery dies. Once I recharge the battery it runs fine again.

Looking for some assistance on how to test out the charging system. Or suggestion of what other issue it may be.

Thanks.

Nobody has any suggestions on what my issue may be?
Injustice installed an onboard charger to keep the battery charged up every couple of days. It works. But I'd like to fix whatever the problem may be.

Is it a key start or pedal start?

Use a voltmeter to check the output voltage of the Sg while the engine is running at mid to full throttle. You should have about 14v at the battery.
If battery voltage does no increase shut the engine off, then use a jumper to ground the DF terminal of the SG to chassis or battery -
Start the engine and run at full throttle and check the voltage again, it should run up to over 16v. If not, the SG is faulty.
If it does increase, the voltage regulator is faulty.

Key start.

What do you mean by Sg wire ?? I was assuming you mean starter/generator wire.
I see three wires.
A small yellow.
A thick black.
& a thick green which seems to go to another post on the starter/generator.

The yellow wire is on the DF terminal.
All of the terminals are marked on the case.

So do I run the test off the DF (yellow) wire?

Thx. I cannot cleanly see any markings on this one that's why I asked. On my other carts I can see the markings clearly (but still didn't locate a "Sg" wire on any of them) but none of them are key starts. This is my first key start, so I suspected there might be a difference with the starter/generator.

Yes, DF terminal, jumper it to ground or to bare metal on the case.
SG is short hand for Starter Generator. Sorry for any confusion there.

The Generator on the key start carts is slightly different in that it tends to have a higher output at low RPM. I think they just increased the size of the charge field coil which is what the DF post is connected to.
Grounding the DF post forces it to full output for testing. After confirming if the SG does actually charge that way, disconnect the jumper.

Ok, finally got around to replacing the starter/generator after testing the output voltage of less than 11v.

$313 later, I test the new one, and no increased voltage. Ordered a voltage regulator, put that in and the most I can get is 11.8 volts …..

So frustrated. What the heck is going on? Is there something I’m missing?

You do need to have a good clean ground point to test the output.
Did you ground the DF post on the new generator to see if it will produce more than 12v?

The regulator also has to have a good clean ground, and the bracket it's attached to can often cause problems. It often helps to make a ground wire that runs from the center mount stud to the frame.

There could also be damage to the yellow wire between the SG and the regulator. The easy test for that is to unplug the bullet connector, stick a jumper wire in the end that comes from the SG and ground that straight to the battery negative. Then run the engine and see if anything changes.

For anything to make sense though you need to test the SG output first, so you know if it actually works.
