Thanks everyone for the advice! Now I just need to find someone open minded enough to do this for me, since I am mechanically deficient and husband refuses to think there is anything wrong. I'm sure my dad will check it out for me.

Also, I cannot find somewhere to get a fuel filter for this thing, other than online, which will cost more to ship than to buy. The fine folks at Advance auto parts (no offense if anyone works there) seem to think that a lawn mower filter will work. Yes? No?

Can you tell me what size, or send me a link (from the advance web site) as to which one I should use? We only have advance auto or napa here. Thanks!

Napa usually has better parts quality. If memory serves me it takes a ¼" filter, that being the size of the nipples on it. Basically bigger is better, as a bigger filter will last longer. Napa offers several that are ¼". I would get one that will fit where the old one is. That will make mounting easier. I'm short of time today, or I'd be happy to look one up for you!
Turns out I did have time so here's a link. This fits both sizes! Bear in mind, this price is for my local store. Yours may be different! :)

That will work just make sure you install it in the proper direction arrows toward the carb.

How do you adjust the compression? The compression on what? Sorry...I'm so new to this.

We dumped the old gas and put a new filter in. Put in premium fuel. Still needing a quick choke to get her going. But it's definitely running better overall!

Simple...thanks for the link...that is the one I got. Husband installed it (I'm assuming properly since it works).

As you use the cart it will clean itself out and run better. The filter will work either direction, but will clog up much faster if installed backwards. As " racin 161 " said, there is an arrow on it to show the direction of flow.
