Re: Noisy drive clutch (and other stuff) -- '90 Marathon 2-cycle gas
Pull the cover off and have a look. It looks like it has either worn pins, worn weights, or missing spacers.

But I take it this clattering noise isn't "normal" or "typical," right?

Absolutely not.
Pull the center bolt out, then the 6 outer screws. The cover will be under slight spring pressure. |

Thanks... I'll pull the cover tomorrow. Today I'm still in pain from yesterday's work under the house!

Apparently you have not achieved true "addict" status yet. A true cart "addict" wouldn't rest until the problem was resolved. Don't worry, you'll eventually get there! |

Thanks, '89. I'll have a look tomorrow and then come back with photos.
I appreciate your giving my cart a listen! |

Re: Noisy drive clutch (and other stuff) -- '90 Marathon 2-cycle gas
Well, I'm a hopeless tinkerer, so during my down-time, I've designed a couple of electrical mods I look forward to trying after I fix a few things on the cart. I don't know whether that indicates addiction potential. ;) I'm afraid most of my efforts have to go to my 280Z, though. That's more than enough to keep me busy.
QUESTION: That first throttle linkage on top of the differential: Is there a governor underneath there? I thought the governor would be in the engine. (Are there TWO governors?) |

The motor has no governor. You are correct about the governor in the differential.

Re: Noisy drive clutch (and other stuff) -- '90 Marathon 2-cycle gas
Hello Fast Woman,
Could it possibly be wear in the clutch housing versus the shaft (key maybe?) or noises coming from the "dogs" that drive the moving disk in or out? (also wear) I've worked with a few of them in snow mobiles but never a cart, and since I too just picked up a '90 GX 444, I thought I'd comment as mine makes a similar noise but not quite as loud as yours. I have not had time to work on mine yet other than to start it with a shot of fuel as there seems to be no feed. The noise is the first thing I noticed but dismiss it as normal "wear" on mine. I agree with the other poster that taking the clutch apart will likely be the most revealing action you can take. I'll follow this thread to maybe learn from it also. Thanks, regards j.j. |
