10w-40 causing smoking?
I just changed my oil in my 1989 cc ds, I used exactly 1 quart of 10w-40 conventional. Right after I changed the oil, I noticed that if smokes a little bit at start, the smoke is dark black/blueish. It seems to stop once its running, but if it stops, it will smoke again on start. Could this be too thin of oil and slipping past the rings or valve? The engine runs great and has no issues starting or running out to top speed.

Dark black exhaust is over fueling -- light blue to white is oil.

I use 10w 30 in mine and I have no smoke. That engine calls for 40 oz. of oil so you might need to add a little. Not sure if that would have any effect.

You have a dipstick, don't you? That will tell you your oil level. Overfilling it can cause major damage too.

dark smoke is fuel, bluish white smoke is oil. you got a fuel issue here. I suggest taking the carb off and cleaning it and replacing fuel filters first.
