2004 XRT1500 switch problem
Hi all, I'm looking a a buddy's club car carryall xrt1500 4x4. there is a toggle switch on the dash that changes it to 4wd. it doesn't always seem to work going back to 2wd. what does this switch go to and what happens when switching to 4wd? I don't see anything on either axle that may engage it. is there something on the transfer case unit that switches from 4 to 2 wd?
thanks for any help |

Re: 2004 XRT1500 switch problem
If your on a computer, go here and download a pdf of the Illustrated Parts List for it...
>>> http://www.gcartparts.com/category-s/798.htm In the Electrical Components section, it will have the schematics for it, and from what I see, (I have no experience with these) there should be an electrical connector on the front differential with grey and black wires. It also shows a differential relay, and a coil inside the front differential, but doesn't really show the switch itself. If you open the Drivetrain Components section, it will have an exploded view of the front differential, (pg 13-4) and it shows the coil(s) #13 and #14... How it works, and why it's not disengaging? it could be a bad switch, a weak relay, or a weak coil... I really have no clue! but, at least you have something to start with! |

Re: 2004 XRT1500 switch problem
Lockman1 , thanks I'll look at the info. on first glance I didn't see anything on the front or rear diff that would make it go in or out. I recall several 4x4 cars/trucks that have a actuator on the front that engages the front axle. I'll do more checking and post back . thanks

Re: 2004 XRT1500 switch problem
After you turn off the switch, stop, and back the cart up a few feet and it should disengage.

Re: 2004 XRT1500 switch problem
Tahoedawgz71 , I don't think it's the front end now. after playing with it a little it seems the rear is not pulling. the front goes in and out of gear with the switch but when it's not engaged the rear won't pull. I'm thinking there's something in the gear case that's not workin'.

Re: 2004 XRT1500 switch problem
Very common, and a very expensive repair. The clutches in the rear differential have worn and no longer have any grip. It's a limited slip differential, so when it wears, it won't work at all. They've redesigned the unit and the new carrier features a redesigned clutch pack to keep this from happening again. They now also require you to run twice as much oil in the differential as before. Email me for details if you'd like.
