blown shaft seal questions?

going through my 89 ezgo marathon 2 stroke and trouble shooting as we go, first i had fuel delivery and carb problems, fixed that and got it running, then i could not get it to run with out back firing at high revs, we started to look for where the back fire was coming from, and i have a blown shaft seal on the fan side of the motor. i have a new one already ordered, but my question is, is it back firing because the seal is blown? or is it something else and just going to blow the next seal out as well? thanks guys!

Bad crank seals cause lean conditions witch can cause back firing so the seal is likely the issue I highly suggest doing both wile you're taking the time to do them

Definitely change both seals at the same time. Use Loc-tite, and stake them in .

stake? Can we do this without pulling out engine? Isn't the drive clutch filled with oil?

No oil in there. The flywheel, and clutch would both have to come off.

Yours sits differently than a 2pg, so I have no idea if it's possible in the cart. Something tells me it's not worth the hassle. I can have my entire engine out in 20 minutes, or less.

Staking is when you use a hammer, and center punch to put a little ding in the aluminum just outside of the seal. It slightly deforms the case to prevent the seal from popping out.

took us 30 minutes to pull the engine! does any body have any pointers for getting the drive clutch off with out the puller?

Find a bolt that threads into the clutch (not the crank) set motor on its side fill water in the clutch bolt hole wrap bolt with some Teflon tape and thread it into the clutch and it will pop off

That is what we did,but with oil.Worked nicer than expected,

I like water because it's easy to clean up and drys make sure you clean shaft and inside of clutch with break clean and remove all residue you want them to be completely clean if the clutch or crank has lube the clutch can go to far on the taper off the crank and crack the clutch
