Re: new to these toys, got a '88 marathon-not running
That's not an 88 muffler. Looks like somebody gave up on trying to find one when they found out it cost more than what the cart is worth.

Well, looks like it’s a little over $400 for a rebuild kit. Still need to get the clutch Assy off the crank. It looks like my case halves have been apart before, there’s red rtv there. Granted I don’t know what would have been used from the factory but I doubt it was hi-temp rtv

Re: new to these toys, got a '88 marathon-not running
Never use rtv to seal the case halves, You'll need an Anaerobic Sealer. Sounds like the prices have gone up a bit since I did mine two years ago, I shopped long and hard with a lot of calls and finally found them for $320ish.....
Here's a link to my rebuild that might be of interest http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...e-rebuild.html |

got my rebuild kit today, have to see what I can find out about getting the clutch off the crankshaft. 3 main bearings? must be 2 on the clutch side, guess i’ll find out.

Yep, 2 on the clutch side. It's worth the extra $$$ to get the complete rebuild kit, now you have a new crankshaft but most important a new bottom rod bearing too. And that crank is soooo pretty, almost hated to hide all that pretty inside the case lol

Re: new to these toys, got a '88 marathon-not running
got the clutch off finally, what a fight. couldnt find a fine thread 3/4 bolt for the clutch but did remember that some hitch balls are fine thread, 3/4 shank and have a couple of flat spots at the base of the ball to hold when tightning.(or in this case, put a wrench on to use as a puller bolt) it did work and the ball was only $6. needed one for my tractor drawbar anyhow. yes that new crank is pretty. only makes sence when its tore this far down to replace everything, theres no governor on this engine and if its going to stay together all new bearings will be a big plus. still need to get sealer for the crankcase and loctite for the seals. want to read more before putting it all back together. wife wants to make it “street legal” so i’ve got wires and lights to do, and a windshield, and brakes.... not messing with that until its running though.
