G16 gas will not start
I recently purchased a used G16. I completely stripped the cart and had the skin repainted. Shortly after reassembling I started noticing starting issues. I performed all the standard tests. Eliminated the main switch and accelerator switch. Both okay. When the accelerator pedal is depressed you can hear the solenoid click but nothing from the generator. I removed the starter generator and replaced the brushes and gave it a thorough cleaning. I then reinstalled. Still wouldn’t start. Jumped high amperage leads on starter solenoid and generator would spin on several attempts. Removed all jumpers and attempted normal start. No click from the solenoid now, once again on several attempts. Checked fuse near solenoid and it is good. Removed starter solenoid and energized small terminals by using my lawn mower battery and checked continuity through high amperage terminals. Click is back and continuity across high amp terminals was good?? Can anyone offer advice? This thing is driving me crazy! Thank you.

Re: G16 gas will not start
Check cable from battery to solenoid large post. I have had a similar issue and this was the cause.
Check voltage (for drop) at solenoid when attempting to start. |

Re: G16 gas will not start
When you tested the removed solenoid and it clicked, you say click is back, is that clicking while it was reinstalled on the cart?
With your solenoid installed, determine on the two small post which is the grounded post and which is the positive post. Test both with a meter, from pos battery to neg side of the solenoid you should get 12V and then neg battery to pos solenoid post with key on and pedal pushed again 12V. If you don't have one or the other then a problem is in one of those areas. If you have that then you should be getting 12V to the big post going to the starter/Generator. If not you could have a bad solenoid. BUT!! you could still have a bad solenoid because even if you are reading 12V at the big post going to the S/G when you push the pedal, you might not be getting the AMPS to spin it due to bad contacts in the solenoid. Welcome to the world of electricity!!! |

Re: G16 gas will not start
JI did check continuity of the main cable and as an added precaution cleaned the terminal connector with a wire brush, then stripped and reconnected the hot lead to the terminal
No, I have not retested the solenoid on the cart. My cart is stored near our camper, so I brought the solenoid home with me. I went ahead and purchased a new solenoid in the meantime then disassembled the old one out of curiosity. One of the contact points was silver and the other was black. If I knew how I would post a picture of it for you to see. I’ll be going back down to the camper this weekend and install the new solenoid. I’m not 100% that is the problem but I am hopeful otherwise I guess I’ll be starting over. Last edited by RandyG; 09-01-2021 at 07:41 PM.. Reason: Added photo |
