Clutch Problem/Replacement on G9
Hi, Last summer I bought an early 90's G9 golf cart. It sat all Winter and this weekend I went out to our golf shed to check that the cart would run and drove it around a bit. Well while driving it, I heard a loud pop under the seat and when I checked it I saw a big hole in the clutch housing. Looks like it was ripped open.
This is my first cart and would like to try the repairs myself. A few of the questions I have is: 1. How big of a job is it to replace the clutch? 2. Do you think the whole clutch needs replaced or just repaired? 3. Is there an equivalent to a "Haynes" manual for Golf Carts? Thanks for you help. |

Re: Clutch Problem/Replacement on G9
Welcome to BGW!
1. Not a big job with a clutch puller and an impact wrench. 2. In my opinion, the cost of rebuilding is too close to a new clutch, I would do new. 3. I don't know about a Haynes manual but you can find a Yamaha G9 service manual on e-bay. |

Re: Clutch Problem/Replacement on G9
Thanks for the reply. Do you have any suggestions of reputable places or websites to buy cart parts from? Just from a quick search on the internet it looks like prices range from $280-350 for this clutch. Do those prices sound reasonable? Also, is there other belts, parts I should replace at the same time while the clutch is removed?
Thanks. |

Re: Clutch Problem/Replacement on G9
Sorry to post again but thought of another question.. I don't know enough about the internal mechanics of the clutch that would've caused it to rip a hole in the housing. Could it be as simple as buying a new housing for the current clutch?
I figure thats unlikely but thought I would ask. |

Re: Clutch Problem/Replacement on G9
I'm pretty sure you had a roller or a weight let go. New cover won't help.
All of our site sponsors are reputable and great to work with. Here is one that looks good> http://www.everythingcarts.com/p-264...as-g2-g22.aspx If you are running an old drive belt, now would be a good time to replace it. Also check the ramp shoes on the rear (driven) clutch. Ramp shoes are the plastic pieces that ride on the helix. |

Re: Clutch Problem/Replacement on G9
Thanks! So I see on that site that they also sell the "Comet" clutch puller. Will that work on my oem clutch? Well at least I assume it's OEM.

Re: Clutch Problem/Replacement on G9
Don't tell anyone you heard this from me Since the weight kits are at 75.00 (OEM Yamaha), it comes to the point were all owners must make a choice. Rebuild stock clutch or buy an aftermarket. I think I'm going to try some aftermarket weight kits @35.00 each and see how they fair. I do like the smooth engagement of the stock clutch, seems the aftermarket bolt on units rev up before engagement (to high for my liking). But comes a point of dollars. I have always recommended a greasing discription (ie: only want grease on the bushings on the floating flange, not on the weights and pins). Good luck on what ever you decide.
