Re: replace seals in a 3 pg
I see some of you guys recommended using locktite on the crank seals. What kind do you use and where can I find it?

Re: replace seals in a 3 pg
There are two Loctite versions, one requires chemicals to get it off and is considered permanent, the other is just a regular version and this is the one you need. You can get it at any auto store, it is clearly marked on the packet and I recall it is blue in color. Just put a thin bead only on the metal part of the seal that mates with the crankcase. Also wipe a generous amount of 2 stroke oil on the rubber part of the seal before assembly.

Re: replace seals in a 3 pg
blue loctite should be just fine. if you think you may never need to remove them you could use red, but i think that is overkill since the seal is an interference fit anyway.
any auto parts store will have loctite. |

Re: replace seals in a 3 pg
Man... you guys are fast, I didn't know if it was the blue stuff or some special hard to find item. Also, in addition to the oil on the seal should I throw some grease on the inside of the seal and on the crank itself? Thanks again, and again and again.

Re: replace seals in a 3 pg
I would skip the grease. If a blob blocks the journal to the bearings you will starve them of oil. Just lube everything with 2 stroke oil and be prepared to be smoked out when it first fires up.

Re: replace seals in a 3 pg
I can't get the freaking seals out @#%*! i am moments away from cracking open the case but I really don't want to do that. I have tried every sharp and dull item in my garage and can't get them to budge. Help!

Re: replace seals in a 3 pg
I used a very large screwdriver as a chisel and tapped on the seal as if I was trying to unscrew it. This seemed to loosen it and then I pryed it out using the screwdriver as a lever. Don't worry about destroying the seal just don't damage the seating in the crankcase. I hope you can do this as spliting the crankcase is a pain.

Re: replace seals in a 3 pg
Try to bend the old seal and grab it with a pair of needle nose! Like Dave said, dont worry about the seal, seal, destroy it if you have to, I DID! Just dont scratch the Crank or the case!

Re: replace seals in a 3 pg
ski, you need to look at this as once in life time opportunity! you can take you case apart and check all of the bearings, etc.
it really is not that hard, and the only expense to doing a thorough inspect is a tube of good sealer. |
