Where to get torque kit
Hello! I'm looking to get an easy to install torque kit for my yamaha, it's an 01 but not sure what model if it makes a difference! I cannot find the serial # anywhere. I got a hold of the dealer my dad purchased from and they were able to tell me the year..I think it's a g16. Anyways I want a lil more low end to make sure I'm not embarrassed trying to make it up a lil slope or similar obstacles that may get in my way. It has the lift with 22s on it and I think the governor on the differential has been tightened up. I'm kind of confused there cause I'm not exactly sure what's what back there. Has a long threaded rod with the 10mm nut tightened all the way or the nut all the way screwed as far as it will go. If it is done, the dealer must have done it when they installed lift and tires.
I know there are sponsors on here but I was not able to access some of them to find a torque kit, if anyone has any info at all to help locate and or keep me from doing something I shouldn't do.. don't hesitate to chime in. Thanks in advance! |

Re: Where to get torque kit
If it were me, I would read this site, and do all the maintenance I could, before spending money. Drive the car, find out where it's weaknesses are, and address those areas. Then start the high performance work! Plowmans or CPP for parts, (venders here)!

Re: Where to get torque kit
Make sure the clutches are working right before you put parts on, clean and lube them properly. Also a worn belt is worse for torque with a lifted cart. You might try the hd kevlar belt its a little wider. A cut secondary sheave will give more power at low speeds. I've never heard of a torque kit with a secondary spring that was easy to install, only that you can get a yamaha spring for limo and utility carts that is stronger. All this stuff will only keep the rpm up on hills, you still only have around 10hp no matter. That is why the cvt needs to work properly or you don't even get that. There are few mods for the engines but plowmans has some. You can put a bigblock in and forget all those issues lol.
The 10mm nut controls speed, in more is more speed. You should get high 20s mph I would guess but some carts will do 30 or better with 22/23s. My G9 would do 30gps on flat pavement with no governor at all, and it was screaming I didn't do that very often. It took a bit to get going that fast. I just put a clone in because stock engine got so tired, it has a lot more power but with the same gearing the speed is similar. Another stock lifted G9 just like it would do 27 with the governor all the way in, same tires. Engine has no power up there. |

Re: Where to get torque kit
sho305 all I want is enough "umph" to pull four people easily and inclines, not too big of ones. I have already had my share of hill climbers "Rhino" now I just want to cruise. So would it do me any good to just get the stronger spring and spacer for low end torque that they sell for about $50, just making sure we are talking about the same thing. I just got this so I know nothing about them. The belt looks like it's in good shape, should I just clean the pulleys to make sure they have nothing on them? I think everything is in good shape, my dad bought it from a dealer that fixes them up back in 06 and probably put Maybe..20 miles on it.
Which would be easier.. Changing sheaves or putting in different spring Or which would be better for the motor? Thanks! |

Re: Where to get torque kit
If you are indeed looking for a spring I have one listed in the classifieds here and is also listed on eBay. I paid 60 for it but selling it for 40 shipped.

Re: Where to get torque kit
The spring keeps the rpm up, they do work but don't get the wrong one like a cheap one from ebay. Some of them cut your top speed if they are too strong. We know plowmans and CPP have good ones.
A new belt is 1 3/16 wide. Yamaha says toss it when it is 1" wide, however with a lifted cart it will start to bog before that so I'd say don't let it get to 1". You have to take the fixed secondary sheave off to get the movable (inside) off, to get the spring out. So it is a good time to put a cut sheave on, or have yours cut its pretty simple. It just lets them come together more so the belt pushes out the top some at rest and gives you a lower gear. This will help a fair amount up to 5mph or so then it shifts. The spring will help up to higher speeds. Don't really have to clean the pulleys, unless you grease it more than 1-2 pumps in each clutch. Its only a bushing and more will come out on the belt, that has to be cleaned off with solvent. But nobody services the clutches, they really should be cleaned inside and out every so many years and lubed on the metal parts that move. Its more important than people realize that the clutches shift properly to get max speeds and power....make sure the rollers/weights/etc are not worn or broken, or you don't get full power. If the cart is really in new condition then likely not an issue unless it shows signs of a problem. Depends on your budget really how much you want to do, and your needs of course. |
