How much is too much-lighting?
97 G16A, what do you all think may be the limit as far as lighting with the stock electrical system.
Built this prerunner bumper (see my pics-newbie can't post pics), and haven't yet wired the lights. 4 55w halogens, think it's too much? |

Re: How much is too much-lighting?
You should be OK. I can run every light on my cart at the same time! This includes two rear led stop lights, two led bar lights, two blue lights on the bottom of the cart, two led off-road lights on the front, and four 55 watt halogens! Now, if I stop for a while, I cut everything off!

Generator only puts out 15 amps at high RPM.

Re: How much is too much-lighting?
I've got (4) 75w Halogens on my G16, they're wired as 2 sets (each with its' own relay) on a rocker with up being all 4, mid being off and down being the center 2 (low beams) - they dim a little with the engine not running (not much but noticeable) but with them on as well as my LED taillights and stereo (which has a 200w Amp) it charges just fine ...
I don't leave it all on with the cart off for long, though :) |

Re: How much is too much-lighting?
LEDs' are the way to go for amp-draw.I've been installing LED Beacon-Lites and LED-Strobes recently. It was always a 15-25amp circuit for each when they were standard-lites,now they can run in tandem on a single 10-15amp circuit.I run 2 100-watt equipment-lites,and never had any issues with the original starter/gen.setup.I never hooked them up last summer with the Opposed,so I don't know how that charging-system will work for them.Hope this helps.

Re: How much is too much-lighting?
Hey Pachanga - I had a chance to ride in a cart with an incredible LED setup, it was an 80x3w Light Bar - VERY similar tech to what I work with as far as Stage Lighting - ABSOLUTELY INSANE !!!! The one I saw was 6000k and I'm not a huge fan of that particular piece of the spectrum, but holy hell did it light things up and with a roughly 8A draw at 12, less at the normal 14 .... I'm thinking that I may pull one of the 1m RGBW lights out of inventory and bypass the trans, they run consistant from 9-26vdc so it shouldn't be a problem, it *might* be cool as hell to spectrum mix on a ride through the woods, hey?

Re: How much is too much-lighting?
15A x 13.5v = 202.5 watts.
I have run set of 55w for many years no problem. Quads are only going to be powered at higher engine rpm, at low speed will run off your battery. Sure it will work but eventually wear the battery down. But if you don't use them that long and run the cart in the daytime to charge, it should be fine. A half dead battery will fire up a cart no problem anyway, its just not good on the battery. LED are great, they take much less power. My cart will be all LED except the driving lights. I also have some LED driving lights that are not that big, plan to use them for headlights on local low speed night travel. |
