Default Transmission Input Shaft Replacement

I am replacing my broken transmission input shaft on my 1999 G16 and have never been into the transmission before. Correct me if I am wrong but it looks like I should be able to do this with the axle in the cart? Any advice anyone can give me before I tear into it? Any special tools required?
Also, I purchased a G22 shaft and gear to replace it with, anybody see any problem with that as well? I'm doing this for more lower end.

Welcome! First, I've never seen "broke", but it could happen. All Dana transaxles (G14/G16/G22) were the same, so the G22 input shaft and gear (what gear?) will work. Second, You will not get anymore "lower end". A good tourque spring kit (I like "Jakes") will be the thing that gives you more lower end. Lastly, You can change the input shaft/idler/forward/reverse gears buy removing the driverside wheel/inner fender/ and all the secondary parts. There is a "set screw/spring and ball" that will need to come out (don't lose them) so you can "pull" the side case off (hopefully all the gears and thrust washers will stay in place so you can "stack them" as they come out for reassembly). You may also need a side case gasket, if the old one is damaged and you dont replace it...when you install everything back..you wont have the "tolerances" and it will "bind" on you. Sorry so long of a post. Hope this helps. Later Dave

That does help, thank you.
I'm not sure which gear it is but it is a larger one (I'm guessing +/- 4" in diameter) that I was told to replace because the gearing is lower, but you discounted that. So I'm assuming it won't have to be replaced.
It broke from the skid plate hammering a rock which bent it upward impacting the driven clutch.

Just thought about this again today at work. I've always thought the "reverse" gear seemed to have a "lower" gear ratio. My question is..can you use a reverse gear in place of the forward gear for a lower gear ratio? Been trying to look up ratios for the gears in my owners and service manuals (with no luck) and i'm wondering if this "guy" you talked to had done it and it worked for him. When I build "big block cars", I've always wanted one that would "wheel stand" when you "stabbed it". Would it work ? Would the gears line up on the input shaft correctly? I'm interested now. Do not discount anything yet. I still beleive the torque spring set up would work for you, but lets see what I can find out in the next few days. Later Dave

Since they are gears you can't change the size of one without changing the size of the one that meshes with it. In fact you have to be careful about changing gears sometimes because they wear into each other, but with this low power its unlikely to be an issue long as all gears are in good condition. I did a CC a while back, I just pulled it from the cart it really was not hard to do. Just impact the bolts off the cradle/springs and not much else is there except the shifter cables. I left the wheel on the 'bottom' side and stood it up on that and cleaned the outside (drained it before I started). It was easy to take the axle off and cover off, then play with the gears. Put high gears in that one and new bearings, it worked great. Cleaned it and put light coat of sealant on old gasket it didn't leak at all. Stood it on the tire/wheel the whole time. Stuck it back under the cart and was done. Yours may be different but all are similar.
