Re: Yamaha G9 build
I only cleaned the carb bowl, that's all. My uncle has a spark plug tester that clamps to the top of the plug and the wire plugs in the back end. NO SPARK! I also clamped it to the engine block. No fire is getting to the spark plug.
My uncle has a compression test kit and the compression is 170 psi. Where do I go from here? |

Re: Yamaha G9 build
FOUND IT!!!
I got back out there this afternoon and put a voltage tester on the orange lead going to the ignition coil. I had 12 volts there when cranking, but no voltage to the spark plug. I started tracing wires backward and came across an unplugged wiring harness under the ignitor. Plugged it in and it fired right up!! The cart hadn't ran in a few years and I haven't messed with the carb too much so it ran terrible for the first 10 minutes or so. After that, it started running better and better. I plan on getting the carb clean now. The next step is new filters and a spark plug. I zip tied the govenor, but I think I'm going to bypass it. Then, maybe, the fun stuff will begin. Thank you very much for the help sabercat! |

Re: Yamaha G9 build
no problem! glad you found the issue. 170psi is great compression, only 5 psi off brand new. that means your engine has very little wear and tear on it which is good

Re: Yamaha G9 build
A little more progress as I wait on parts from 3R and CPP.
I did the governor bypass. It took about 15 - 20 minutes and I didn't hurry. After I rerouted the cable, I noticed that it was rubbing on the starter / generator belt. A tiny drilled hole and a zip tie fixed that. I also rotated the accelerator pedal back toward the seat. Lift kit and tires, HD shock springs and torque kit on order. I took off the stock rear strut springs too. Thankfully, they were removable! I wonder if anything I ordered will be here by Saturday? |

Re: Yamaha G9 build
Hey guys, I have a question. In the "Yamaha governor bypass" sticky thread a $30 tach is mentioned. Is there a brand of Analog tach for a single cylinder engine that I can buy for $30?? I've seen the Tiny Tach, but would rather have something Analog.
