Valve seal replacement
Has anyone had any luck with replacing valve seals to slow down oil burn on a smoky engine? I have a 96 Robin 295 that runs great with good power but smokes a bit, after valve adjustment compression is 140 on both cylinders which is better than i was expecting. I don't feel like getting into a rebuild on this cart, think the valve seals will help?
Thanks JG |

Re: Valve seal replacement
Valve seals usually show when first started little puff white grey.
Once running goes away. Very little smoke unless your guides are badly worn. In witch case it would run badly and be noisy in the top end. If it keeps smoking white grey then its rings. Unless its black that is a carb issue. Oil ups compression. You can have bad rings and compression in range. Over revving can damage the oil rings and still have most all other parts in good shape. As long as the cylinders are not to badly worn a ring job and gaskets can sometimes be all that is needed. |

Re: Valve seal replacement
I was thinking with 140 compression in both cylinders it shouldn't be smoking, that's why i was wondering about the valve seals.

Re: Valve seal replacement
I have replaced the valve seals before, to alleviate the same problem... It helps a little but it's just borrowed time and if the valve guides are worn then they usually don't help much.. I guess it will come down to the condition they are currently in... If they are hard and brittle at the top, then I would tend to think that new ones would definitely help out.. Easy job to do..

Re: Valve seal replacement
Did changing the seals help? In the same boat here except compression up around 150

Re: Valve seal replacement
If you don't want to freshen motor you can try valve seals but it's probably oil rings they will run a long time while smoking just keep an eye on oil level better yet add the oil like for extra insurance if the cart doesn't already have it
