2002 TXT Carb Linkage Question
I've read for a couple hours about how to adjust the governor etc...
My question is this: When trying to start, should the short vertical linkage to the carb itself be holding the butterfly ALL the way open, or just a little until it starts? I'm asking because the long horizontal piece of rod looks to be makeshift repaired. I'll post pics tomorrow. My new to me project turns over, but never really acts like it wants to fire and go. I pulled the plugs, which are fuel fouled (replace tomorrow), and ran a quick compression test, which came back 110-115psi. Didn't check for strength of spark yet though. So again, to clarify. If I floor the pedal, the cables move freely, but the small vertical rod only cracks the butterfly on startup. Thanks, guys! |

Re: 2002 TXT Carb Linkage Question
You can adjust up the linkage, kind of a modified turnbuckle on that horizontal rod. Ideally you want it to just barely start opening the throttle butterfly when the pedal is pushed far enough to engage the starter. Opening too much , too soon and the throttle becomes kind of an on/off switch: jerky take offs with no ability to smoothly operate at lower speeds. Too little, too late opening means lower cruising speeds. Get that accelerator linkage dialed in first. If needed, you can tighten up the governor after that.

I thought the same thing. Get it starting and running right, then crank it up a little at a time.

Re: 2002 TXT Carb Linkage Question
Well, I think I got it figured out.
The guy I got it from said the engine was "rebuilt". Apparently they never set the throttle cable correctly. So, the butterfly didn't open very much even with the pedal all the way down. So, with a minor adjustment, and a couple of new plugs, she cleared right up and seems to go pretty good. Ill adjust the governor once there's less snow and ice on the roads...lol. |

Re: 2002 TXT Carb Linkage Question
Isn't that compression low?
Ours was in the 150 range |

Re: 2002 TXT Carb Linkage Question
Might be, but the o-ring on my gauge isn't in the best shape, so I didn't sweat it too much.
I just wanted to make sure it wasn't super uneven. |
