2008 RXV Troubleshooting Fail start sequence, rocking fixes it.
Hi all,
I have a 2008 RXV that intermittenly fails to start properly when key is turned on. When it fails, solenoid clunks properly, but there is nothing after that (no .1 second beep, no twitch of motor or test of motor brake). I've found I can rock cart forward/back (can be gentle), turn on key during rocking motion and it starts up correctly. I spent yesterday replacing the encoder bearing, but no difference.. I've ordered a new motor brake, because I can always use an extra and it might fix the problem. I'm really hoping this isn't a bad motor or sensors on the motor that is failing because those are $$$. I don't have a handheld for the controller to pinpoint the exact cause. I'm hoping one of you might come up with something overlooked that is tested on startup that could fail intermittently and be temporarily corrected with rocking. Cart will fail 80% of time if stationary, and pass 80% of time if rocking... Cheers, Mark Taylor |

It's likely gonna be the brake. Carefully follow the instructions on this site for installation, or you can burn up the new brake in as little as 500 feet of driving.

Installed new motor brake, wasn't it... still the same:
-Turn on key when stationary: 80% - solenoid clunks but NO .1sec reverse beep, no go. 20% - starts up correctly. note: if it fails, subsequent tries will always fail as well until cart is rocked. -Rock cart gently back and forth while turning key on 80%- cart starts up correctly, and drives fine 20%- either solenoid clunks and no beep, or continuous beeping if rocking too vigorous. any additional thoughts? Right now I'm contemplating either purchasing a held held to diagnose ($400) or a Navitas 600A controller ($800-$900, but way more fun). -Mark Taylor Frisco, TX |

Did you find out the problem? I am having the same issues with my 2008 RXV failing the start sequence until rocking back and forth. Seems like it is worse after replacing the motor brake.

Rocking or shaking something to get it going..first thing I would think of is a slack connection somewhere

Very common with early RXVs with the Danaher controller. It is a motor brake related issue. Installing an aftermarket "heavy duty" motor brake, or incorrect installation of the correct motor brake will cause this. If the installer overtightened the mounting bolts, it may have already damaged the new motor brake. The torque rating on the bolts is in inch pounds. Only tighten enough to flatten the split lockwashers, more than that will damage a new motor brake.
