Best Option for ST350 w/Blue Smoke?
Hello from Florida. Thanks for this forum.
I have an ST350 Workhorse. A year or two ago, while I was driving, I looked down and saw that the oil light was on. I stopped, but now I get a little blue smoke when I drive. It looks like the oil escaped for some reason, even though the cart doesn't leak. I read somewhere that this can happen if you don't seat the dipstick correctly. Anyway, big surprise. I want to fix the cart, but I don't want to pay a repairman $2000. What's the best option? I have read that it's possible to install different engines that (unlike mine) still receive factory support. I've also read that rebuilt engines are available. I don't know if the engine can be rebuilt. I'm reasonably handy, but I'm not a mechanic. I don't particularly want a more powerful engine. This cart is uncomfortable enough at its current top speed. I have to admit; it might be beneficial to get WORSE mileage, since the gas would spend less time sitting and going bad. |

I bought it used, from the guy who used to own my house, so I don't know the year. It's an ST350.

Maybe we can narrow it down.
Do you know what engine you got ? I am going to guess you have the 350 CC Robbins, maybe pre-MCI ? Timing cover will be black on the pre-MCI and gray on the MCI. Can you take a picture of the engine ? so we can help you decide if you need to rebuild, install a rebuilt or do a swap . |

Also, the oil light on the dash is linked to oil pressure, not oil level. If you had low oil pressure theres a lot of potential causes. Some are easy and can be done with the engine in the cart. Some will require much more work and $.
There should be a sticker on the cross brace under the seat, in front of the engine. This will tell you the year of the cart. |

Re: Best Option for ST350 w/Blue Smoke?
I looked at the cart again, and I am now under the impression that the reason it runs low on oil is that it burns it. I don't think I did anything wrong, apart from not assuming I had to check the oil every single time I ran it. I think it had a problem when I bought it, which is fine, because it was nearly free. I guess the previous owner ran it dry and screwed up the rings and whatever else.
There is no sticker under the seat. The hour meter is on 340-something. I am attaching two photos. Best I can do. Is there any hope for this engine, or should I just keep adding oil until it dies for good? |

Motor looks to be pre 99 350 so that year cart would have a plate in the glove box for serial information. If not there someone took it out. Back then ezgo would often engrave the serial number on top of the frame rail beside the right rear tire. Might take a mirror but see what you can see.

Re: Best Option for ST350 w/Blue Smoke?
Option 1. Remove engine and rebuild it. Cost if crank and block are good which they probably are about $400 + using OEM parts if you can do it yourself. That is what I do.
Option 2. Buy a rebuilt one. Price about $750 including shipping. Might be more. It depends on your core. Labor you would have to do . Option 3. 625cc 23HP Big Block Engine Upgrade Kit for 1994-2008 $1599.00 . You would have to do this. I never liked this option but many here do. Option 4. Find a used one but I always look at like this. Yours is used Option 5. You can run it like it is now and keep a watch on the oil |
