Ok, found a broken wire and now have forward back. Reverse is trying to work but the starter/generator moves a little with the belt loose and sometimes will take off. What should I check before saying it’s the starter/generator?

Have you checked the carbon brushes on the S/G?

no youll need to replace the brushes with the S/G removed. there are rubber plug around the rear of it to access the brushes

Here are a couple of pics to help. First pic is of the rectangular rubber brush cover. Just pry it out and you can access the brushes, its pretty straight foward to do can help rule out the S/G. You also need to look at the armature as well and also the bearings.
