1996 Yamaha g16 - no oil - engine won't spin full now
So we've got a 1996 g16 Yamaha gas cart, and my kids have been riding it all summer and one day it just quit running. We then found out it had burned through all the oil as there was none on the stick once we checked it. We put now oil in it and it started and ran hard for 1-2 mins but then made a nasty sound when I let off the gas pedal and now the starter will spin but I can't spin the engine driveshaft as it gets about 180 degree into a spin and just hangs. I physically cannot get the engine to turn a full 360 degrees at this point. Is there anything I can do to loosen there shaft so it freely spins by hand or is it past the point of no return?
If the engine just seized up is it better to just sell for parts to someone or replace the engine (but we aren't mechanics so don't really have the know how to replacing the engine). If parts , what is something like this worth at this point. Thanks in advance for any advice you all can offer! Nathan |

FYI the nasty sound was like a hard stopping of the engine if that helps.

pull the plug and look in the whole to see if the piston is moving, where are you located?

Just came across this site while trying to diagnose the issue. You mean pull the oil plug at the bottom and look inside? |

No,crash is saying for you to remove the spark plug to see if the piston moves while you turn the engine over by hand, just be sure you disconnect the battery cables first . |

Re: 1996 Yamaha g16 - no oil - engine won't spin full now
Doesn't sound good.
1. Disconnect battery 2. Remove belts 3. Remove spark plug 4. Grab drive clutch and spin the engine counter clockwise. It should spin very easy. 5. If the engine spins easily, keep spinning it both directions to see if you hear any clanks and clunks. 6. Like Crash said, look in the spark plug hole and see if the piston is moving up and down. You can also use a long plastic rod or pencil in the hole and see if the depth changes as you spin the engine. Report back |
