87 ezgo sputtering under throttle intermittently

Hi, I have an 87 ezgo marathon 2 stroke. I picked it up non running a few months back. After replacing the crank seals it runs. I've also replaced the factory carb with a 50 carb (red hawk parts) spark plug, plug wire, and fuel lines. Right now it fires right up, but then sputters alls on its face, and back fires intermittently. Pulling the choke seems to help, but then it backfires more. I tried swapping the original carb back on and it ran worse. I've also played with the idle screw, but nothing seems to make much difference. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Go up in the stickys where it says seventies to nineties marathon explained. Post 22 has the 85 manual. Look at the carburetor section. Use that to clean your original carburetor. Remove the center stem. There is no idle screw, and there is no adjustment. You may also want to disassemble the fuel pump for a good cleaning and check the diaphragms for tears.
