2001 workhorse over charging the battery
Good morning, I am literally about to pull my hair out. The starter generator is putting to much charge to the battery. Like half throttle is putting 17.5 volts. Battery is new,I have changed the regulator 3 times, and generator is new. The old stuff was doing the same thing. Helppppppp

Field wire like the green wire or what. There is no way I get 3 new regulators and they are all bad. Like I said,it was doing the same thing with the old parts. This makes no sense at all

The small stud where the green df wire connects at the generator could be shorted inside the case. Did it happen to rotate on you?

Yes, the green wire is the field wire. Check what cart around mentioned first.

If the stud spun,it was very little. I can tell you that it is grounded at the generator. I put one lead to the positive post on the battery and the negative lead to the post where green wire goes and I get full voltage on my meter.

Re: 2001 workhorse over charging the battery
I was reading on my phone, and missed the part about the new starter.
We now have to question what hasn't been changed. But first. With the wire disconnected there should be no continuity between the df stud, and the case of the starter. Between DF, and F1 should read 5 ohms. Then moving on..... I believe that yours is the solid state regulator, and all three wires are embedded so they get changed with the regulator. That would eliminate the wires as a problem. We could also ask ourselves what would instantly burn out three brand new voltage regulators. I don't know the answer to that. EDIT: I just discovered this manual in the sticky section. Page L6 step 7 tells about testing for over voltage. It pretty much says look for a grounded green wire. If it's not grounded replace the starter. That's not much help. The first pdf of post #1 https://buggiesgonewild.com/showthread.php?t=173263 I would also check that the red wire from the regulator is going to the large positive output stud of the solenoid. The black goes to ground. |

I am totally stumped,I will make sure I don't have continuity from that stud to the case real quick.

I edited, and added a link. Check it out.
I just had another crazy thought. Have you tried a different volt meter? Can you trust its accuracy? |
