Default Starting my cart

Getting ready to restore my first cart, a Taylor Dunn B248
I'm thinking I can test the motor with a 12v battery?
If I understand correctly I can even check to see if it runs with 12v batteries in series?
I'm totally new to carts.
So if I use good 12v batteries (and they are hooked up correctly) and i run for a short while to test transmission will I ruin the batteries? Don't want to sacrifice my diesel truck batteries just to check it out
Any tips or threads you would recommend to get me started?
Thanks!
