Default Rear axle question,

1979 G-1, I loaded up the trailer got out of the yard and no go.
After further inspection I find the left axle slipped out 4". Sounds like one of those dumb questions eveeryone says needs to be asked so I thought I would ask it.
What holds the axle in?

Default Re: Rear axle question,

The axle bearing may have broke into 2 pieces from extreme wear.
The bearing is held in with a C ring.
Jack it up and slide the wheel & axle out to see if only 1/2 the bearing is on the axle...

Default Re: Rear axle question,

If you take the brake drum off, you'll see 4 12mm head bolts just inside the brake shoes, that must be removed to allow the axle assy to come out. The real problem with this axle is the bearing was installed and then the hub flange was welded on, not the best method You either need a new axle assy or somehow remove the hub flange, replace the bearing and reweld on the hub flange. Scotty, Yamaha's didn't go to the Dana (circlip retainer style) till like 94/95. Hope that helped.
