Consider it like the size of a fuel tank...

4 x 12v small
6 x 8v med
8 x 6v large

I have 8 6V batteries under the seat. I can drive about 30 miles before the batteries are at 50%(48V resting pack voltage)

The down side to eight 6v is a decreased weight to power ratio. 8/6v weigh about 150 pounds more than 6/8v. That is like carrying a passenger who never gets out of the cart.
The cart will run more efficiently on 48v anyway and so your run time will naturally improve by about 10% no matter what battery you use so I prefer 6/8s because they fit in the rack under the seat and they improve the performance over the heavier packs.
I guess it depends upon your needs, I never needed to go 30 miles in a cart.

How far you can travel on a single charge depends on how many Kilowatt-Hours (kWh) of electrical energy is stored in your battery pack.

Attached is a list of various 48V battery packs made up from various voltage and AH Trojan brand batteries. The greater the number in the far right column (kWh), the great distance the cart will travel.
