What should my top speed be??
My apologies to the forum if this is a recurring topic, but I did a search and couldn't find a definative answer. I have a 1990 36V Club Car DS. My top speed is 15mph (as identified by police radar) if I'm in the cart by myself. Speed drops to around 13mph with my two kids on board. I'm not unhappy with the top speed although it is pretty slow up hills. Is this a "normal" top speed for this type of cart? I'm not necessarily looking to do any upgrades, I just wanted to know if this is a reasonable baseline for this year/type cart.
Thanks in advance, JG |

How old are the batteries? Granted, you are running 20 year old electronics and motor, but the speed sounds about right...

Batteries are Trojan 105s....2006 models. They charge up nicely. I don't have a digital meter, but on average they show around 6.5 volts each after charge.

Thank you very much for the replies. Glad to hear that I'm where I should be as far as top speed goes.

Re: What should my top speed be??
They are designed for a slow 14mph for golf course liability reasons. Most can be altered for about 19 max.

Re: What should my top speed be??
When you say "altered" for 19mph. What exactly can I do to achieve that level of top speed?

Re: What should my top speed be??
Taller tires or a gear change will do it. Some carts have programmable controllers that can up the speed. I don't think the CC is one of those. Controller changes and adding batteries could get you 30mph with wheelies. The more you want, the more it costs. They can make the electric carts as fast as gas.(faster)
edit: Check out extreme DC section, you'll see what I mean and they have builds involving CC's. Lots of info in there! |

Re: What should my top speed be??
Your speed sounds normal.
As for slowing a bunch on hills, check your battery cables and connections. An upgrade to 4 gauge cables, even at least on the batteries will make some difference. An upgrade of all cables would be the best and that will help you maintain some of your speed on hills. |

Re: What should my top speed be??
My cart, in stock configuration, had a top speed of 14mph as measured with a GPS. With upgraded controller and all cables I still only get 15-16mph. However, torque is much improved. I have not played with the programmable controller yet. I am trying to decide whether to add a lift kit or just go with 10 inch tires and rims.
A 36V cart is not going to get any faster unless you upgrade it to 48V. From what I have read in other posts, that is the best bang for your buck. |
