Default 82 cc elec. rear axle leak

the center area of rear axle is covered with old oil and dirt. there are no drips on ground. was it an old leak that was repaired, or is it self sealed by all the mess that is there? i plan on cleaning it all off. if there is a leak, what would be the cause?

There is an axle at each wheel, do you mean the differential cover leaked? And it may leak no more because there is no more oil in it? Have you checked the oil? 82 is 28 yrs old. can you post a pic or 2 of it?

thanks scotty that's what i planned on doing. i think it was more than a seep problem when it did happen. it's a pretty heavy build up of gunk. is there a seal at the input shaft that would have caused it and how do i identify what make rear end i have? i'm findng out it is sometimes hard to identify and find things for older (pre 84) carts

I don't know much about the pre 84s.... there are a few members with them. Maybe they ( or somebody else ) will chime in and help?

How long have you had this cart, if its new to you the previous owner could have done many things wrong like trying to filling through the vent by motor? You said "Is there a seal at the input shaft", by a input shaft are you talking about the motor area and if you are it really sounds like incorrect filling at one time causing this mess? This will happen when 80-90 gear oil spill rather than the 30 weight motor oil that I think is correct for your cart?

i think you are probably right old mec. as much of a mess that there is, i think that someone made a mess trying to fill it at one time. the garage should be warmed up now. time to get to work. thanks to all.
