Default 03 PDS Motor gets hot

What does it mean when a motor runs hot? ... and how hot should we expect them to get?

All electric motors are less than 100% efficient and the amps not converted to torque are converted to heat, so it is normal for electric motors to heat up during operation.

Sepex (separately excited) motor such as a PDS motor typically operates in the 50% to 80% efficiency range and can get pretty hot when ran at slow speeds and at top speed for extended periods of time.

The max operating temperature for a Class H insulation motor is 239°F (Measured at the case), but it is best to stay below about 190°F. When driving faster than walking speed, but less than top speed in freedom mode (about 19MPH), with one or two people onboard and on mostly level ground, motor should probably be at 150°F or less when the air temperature is 80°F or less.

One thing that can cause excess heat is stuck or worn brushes not making good contact with the commutator which results in arcing which causes heat (think welding machine).

Could be other issue(s) as well.
