Default Fan for controller heat sink

Quite often you hear of people putting bigger tires and a lift on the older pds carts and having problems with the stock controller over heating. How come no one ever suggests buying one of those small box fans and putting it on the heat sink to help move the heat away. They are a dime a dozen on eBay and Amazon and would seem to help somewhat remedy the situation. How come that is never suggested? Just curious.

I’d usually just upgrade to an Alltrax, which has an optional fan as well. Even a cool stock controller will not perform as well.

You mean like I do to every Danaher with high speed gears that exhibit heat problems? The casting sprues actually line up to drill & tap to put a common computer fan on! The problem (for owners without factory 12v light setup) is where to get a source of 12v that only runs when the key is on. Did this fan mod most recently about 2 weeks ago. About 14 holes into the game a big downhill is encountered (plenty warmed up, then big downhill with lots of braking). He would get it to the bottom, stop to hit the ball, then cart would only crawl. While he stopped, the heat soaked in & made the controller mad for heat. The next thing expected of the cart was "go up steep hill to get out of the valley", it could only crawl up that hill. Unfortunately It took two visits to figure that out, once I found out where on that course the issue was occuring, the solution was easy, add more cooling!

Simple. Add a second solenoid and use it to switch 12v power. Then you can use it to power headlights, stereo, amp, fans, etc.
