1998 EZ GO gas golf cart power problem
Ok Golf cart gurus.
I have a 1998 EZGO gas golf cart. I am having power problems. I just recently got the golf cart and don't know alot about it. Here is my problem. On flat ground it takes off ok (not fast) but after it gets going it's pretty dang fast. I clocked it at 21mph on my gps. BUT I don't want it to go fast, I want it to go fast up hills. When I climb a hill it slows down like an electric cart typically does and if its really steep it won't climb it. I installed the 1 inch shorter belt thinking that it would solve/help the problem but it hasn't. I checked the compression today and driver side cylinder is 135 and the passenger is 160. Do you think someone has installed a high speed gears in it or is that compression not very good in that one cylinder? The rear end does has some "noise" when you are driving it as well. When I wiggle the driven clutch, there is a little play in it. Does anyone have any thoughts/ideas as to what I need for more power/torque? |

Nice looking Cart! Yeh, the one cylinder is very weak. You will probably find oil in the airbox with compression that low in1 cylinder.... it is time to think about a rebuild or replacement on anything below 150 psi.... The short belt is a small help but a machined clutch would be the way to get a truely lower gear to help climb the hills. Contact Tom at CPP about the driven clutch machining

Ok, if I were to rebuild the engine, what all would I need? I don't have alot of money to do a complete rebuild but I don't want to half *** it too. Should I go ahead and redo both pistons too?

Re: 1998 EZ GO gas golf cart power problem
you may be able to just rering it, its always a good idea to replace the rods and intake valves as they are a weak link.
40.00 intake valves 120.00 rods 70.00 rings 60.00 gaskets -------- 290.00 or cheaper if you want to go that way. |

Re: 1998 EZ GO gas golf cart power problem
Nice cart! I would hold up a bit on the overhaul and try adjusting the valves first. I have had the same problem on several carts just adjust the valves and it should bring both cylinders back up to around 170-180, good luck i hope this helps you out. Eventually an overhaul or valve job will come. Let us know!!

Thanks, I will try that first. My wife would love if this helped it until at least next year.
