You have a resistor coil cart.

That box with the four wires going to it, are your coils, make sure none of them are touching and not broken. The piece in front of the box is your wiper board, make sure none of the contacts are burned.

Thanks for the heads up on those resistors. I took apart the housing which was a lot of work thanks to some rusted bolts and sure enough two of the resistors were bad. Ordered a new assembly today. I knew this cart would need some work but I wasn't quite prepared for this. My wife thinks it's a money pit, but I'm having fun despite the added expense. It looks as if the cables to the resistors probably need to be replaced as well. Does anyone know where I can get the appropriate gauge wire with leads as the assembly I ordered did not include them? I appreciate everyone's help.

Question Re: 89 EZGO goes only in high speed !HELP!

I've been looking for cables and not sure which gauge to use. The resistor wires are gauged at 9 for first speed, 7 for second speed, and 5 for third speed. I'm having trouble finding those specific gauges. Is it okay to use a 4gauge wire for all of the resistors or will that overload the resistors? I noticed a lot of carts are using 4 gauge for all of their connections.

Use 4 guage wire throughout, you will not have any problems doing so.

Also, Scotty has just designed a new conversion kit for those older resistor carts to update them to solid state, you may want to consider that option as well.....

Exclamation Re: 89 EZGO goes only in high speed !HELP!

Ok. Got all of my parts in and started re-assembling everything and got a lot of sparks when connecting cables! I have the negative wire on battery unhooked and not sure why I'm getting current. Is there a specfic order in wiring that I should know about?

Thanks Scotty, that definitely helps, but I'm still not sure why I would be getting a current if my batteries are disconnected. I'm a little hesitant to connect everything as (1) I don't want to end up in the ER (2) I don't want to ruin any new parts. What battery cable should be disconnected? I thought the negative.

Obviously both POS and NEG mains until you figure out where the mistake is....
Follow the diagram one cable at a time, and see if you can find your problem
