G9A is always making noise, even when off
Whether or not the key is engaged, sometimes the G9A makes a slight noise, like power is going to the starter. I have watched it and the starter spins oh so slightly sometimes. So was told the switch that engages with the foot pedal is probably shorted. Does that sound about right?

Re: G9A is always making noise, even when off
NO. The main key switch is in series with the accelerator switch which feeds voltage to the starting solenoid control winding (these switches do not connect directly into the starter/gen.) You need to get the wiring diagram from the stickies at the beginning of the threads, then, making sure the ignition switch is off and the accelerator is not pressed, take a voltage measurement across the starter/gen A1 and F2 terminals. (voltmeter neg. lead to A1). Normal would be no voltage here with switches off. If voltage appears here (not normal), your starter solenoid may be defective (feeding current out of the large terminals when it's dropped out). You could also check for voltage on the r/w & blk starter solenoid control terminals at this time also (neg. lead to blk). Normal would be 0 v. Advise what you find.-RAY
PS - A shorted pedal switch would result in the engine cranking as soon as the ignition switch was turned on (without pressing the pedal), or inability to bring cart to complete stop (would continue to crank). Last edited by bigstik40; 10-22-2011 at 09:39 PM.. Reason: made correction & addition. |

Sorry Bigstik40, I went the lazy way and bought a new battery, thinkning that maybe the old battery just couldnt hold a charge. Well, things were good for about 2 days, so I grabbed that wiring diagram and will try your troubleshooting suggestions and get back to you. thanks!

Re: G9A is always making noise, even when off
OK, with key off there is no voltage at the starter gen, nor is there any voltage across the r/w and black starter solenoid terminals. Battery is now showing 11.8v, something is draining it.

Re: G9A is always making noise, even when off
Is it still making a slight noise and moving "ever so slightly" as reported in your original thread ?? If your battery is at 11.8 v, thats not a good sign. You should now pull the positive + battery lead from the bat. and put your test light between the + post and the cable terminal. If it lights, you have a drain somewhere. If it doesn't light, you may still have a small drain and will need to check further with an ammeter. Let us know what you find. (Voltage regulator check next.)- RAY

Re: G9A is always making noise, even when off
That battery was new...
The wierd part is when it is draining, the starter doesn't fire up, but it moves ever so slowly and the belt will turn ever so low and slow at times. Voltmeter is all I have, so it can be used as a test light? |

Forget what I said before, I had some stuff unplugged, sorry. Am charging the battery, will test again correctly in a few hours.

Your voltmeter, if it's a VOM, may have an ammeter function on it. Do you know if it does??? Let me know - RAY
