G-16 Opinions Pls

Newbie here, great site. Been lurking a while.
I have a buddy with a 1999 Gas Yamaha. I assume G-16? Says he can't get it to run right, thinks it's the carb. He's had it in his barn since he got a new cart. Wants $1000 for it. Just wondering if they are a decent year Yamaha to build or does this model have issues.

ANY Yamaha is worth messing with -- they all can be made to perform and/or repaired reasonably. A G16 is a good base.
When he says "can't get it to run right" what is he really saying? He can't get it to run? Does it lack power? Runs but doesn't move? Runs and then dies? Won't start? Starter won't engage? Is it an engine problem? Or wiring? Is the piston through the side of block?
There are so many possibilities ... and none are very expensive to fix if you do the work yourself.
The more you can tell us the better advice we can give!
How is the body? Is it stock? Has it been modified? Is it in good shape? Lights? Top? Cracks? Holes?
Pictures? Is $1K the lowest he will go?

Thanks for the reply. It's about an hour away so I'll have to look close next time I'm there. He's had it in the shop a couple of times and says it's the carb but my guess is bad gas from sitting while he's riding the new cart. Best I remember all stock and used on the course. I'm with you one the price, just wanted an opinion on that model. Would love to build it with my 7 year old as a project and it sounds like about the right deal.

From your description the price is OK -- I've seen people pay more and less. A lot depends on your relationship with this guy --- will he be insulted if you offer him a lot less, or will he take it as FUN and haggle with you? I've got 3 Yamahas, though none quite as new as yours, and $400 is the most I've paid ... for carts I drove before I bought. But then I drive a pretty hard bargain and I don't buy everything I see. But honestly - $1K doesn't seem that bad if replacing the fuel cleaning the carb will get it running.

Then you've got to consider $300-400 for tires, $50 (painted steel wheels) to several hundred for wheels, a lift kit ($100 for a cheap 4" lift to around $800 for a good 8" - 12" lift), etc. If you are handy and have the time/equipment you can build a good lift yourself -- many do. Depends on where you want to go, what you want to end up with and how much $ you have to spend! (And your partner's attitude!)

Oh yes, there will be haggling. Good friend. Didn't know he had it in the barn, just knew he had a brand new yammie in the carport. Thanks again.

In case you couldn't tell ... I don't care much for "sparkies". I guess they're OK in their place ... I just haven't found "their place" yet.

I agree. It's a good looking cart though.
I want a 2012 gas Yamaha but my wife's kitchen remodel got in the way....Hoping to pick the 1999 and build it up.

If somthing happened to my G8 (wrecked or stolen). I would be looking for another 8 or a G16!

Sounds like a good buy to me as long as it isn't trashed. These are great carts!!

He said he bought it in 2001, kept at the golf course, ran fine until he let it sit up too much when he started working out of town. I can pick it up for $600.
I don't know anything about the fuel system on these, what's the worse case scenario on ethanol damage? Do they have a lot of plastic parts? Will it clean out or am I looking at carb, tank, lines, etc?
