Default Cooked my batteries.. not sure what happened :(

So I have a 2004 Club Car DS 48v with batteries that are less than a year old... about a week ago I noticed a weird smell in my garage so I went over to my old cart and the batteries were hot and spitting water out of the caps....

I immediately pulled the charger and the next day I took all the caps off the batteries and they were bone dry.

The batteries are USA Brute Force
The charger is the Yewy charger

Are my batteries dead? They may still have a warranty but not sure if it covers situations like this.

I’ve filled them up with water but now I’m paranoid of putting the charger on.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Rich

Put the charger on it and then monitor the charge. It is the only way you will find if/how much they are damaged.

That is an automated charger and should have shut off unless it had an internal failure. Check the pack voltage now, then every hour while it is charging.

US will warranty them. I have never had Brute Force, but I have had a ton of US Batteries.

Thank you, should I leave the caps on the batteries while charging?

Never charge with the caps OFF, they are designed to trap certain heavy chemical products and only allow gases to vent if the pressure increases.

Don't fill the battery to the top prior to charging to allow for expansion of the fluid.

When was last time you had added water to the batteries prior to this incident?

Maybe a charge or two, honestly it might have even been right before this charge. I always top them off every couple weeks.

Well the Voltage is there so hopefully you will still have the A/h capacity.

When you say "top off", are you just covering the lead plates or are you filling to the fill hole?
