some of those catch plates can only be mounted in 1 direction. Have you tried flipping it over>

No I have not flipped it over. Every once in a while if I'm very gentle I can get it to catch. But normally it comes flying undone.

If you pull it off, the holed should be drilled off center, try installing it long side out.
