Re: My Melex
Well guys I am bringing this back up. After a crazy year of events in my life (Flooded house, new baby/problem pregnancy with the wife) , I can finally get back to working on my cart and not drive it around like a patchwork quilt on wheels.
I have been able to source all the items I am going to need to finish the build so I can just do the really hard part, the WORK!!! First up is the head lights. I am making this car Street legal so I need all the lights and signals but these Melex/early EZ-GO's don't have a real good place to put head lights. I don't particularly care for the just bolt on light look so I picked up some 55 watt halogen "porch" lights for a toy hauler camper. I then created my own headlight pods to mount the light in while giving me the proper angle to use them on the street with out blinding people. Once I had the head light mocked in to place I created a template out of card board, then transfered it to sheet metal. then I bent it up and just taped it together for a final mock up fit before welding. Once it was welded together I then welded it the front of the cart. next step on this is the addtion of the lights for the Pod, the marker/turn signal lights and the driving lights that will mount on a bull bar set up I fabricated. this will be bolted to the back of the bumper. I have been also (as posted on another thread) working on my own flip seat for the back. I have it pretty much done just need to do some final welding then bolt it on to the body. Short of a few mounting holes and fabricating the dash, I am just about ready to move on to body work. I hope it won't take long to finish this up now that I am back on it. enjoy these pics and i will have an update soon! Thanks Arin |

Re: My Melex
Thanks. I do have some body work to do. but the way I am doing it, it should only need minimal filler. I had a harder time working the dents out with a stud gun/slide hammer, and hammer/dolly the right nose and tail were really messed up. I am better with the creative stuff. Dont' worry I have more body mods on the way. I will keep you posted.
Thanks for the comment Arin |

Re: My Melex
OK
got another update. I was able to finish up my parts and pieces for the building of my flip back rear seat. I mentioned this in another thread but here are the pics. I used 24 feet of 1x1x1/8" angle and 24 feet of 1x1 14 guage sqare tube. I also used some metal I had left over from another project. I used some 1/5" unistrut to get a boost on the seat. then made the 2 frames for the hinged back seat. the 1x1 is cut and bent for the armrests and the rear step bumper. I used some more of the Unistrut for the bumper supports and attachment points. Total invested so far - $52. Enough babbling here are the pics. more to come! |

Re: My Melex
Thanks Mike,
Looks like you have the other Bumblebee Idea. My Bumblebee was more in reference to the Mopar Muscle car from the 60's and 70's. but you do have the Colors I am going for. Mine will ultimately be Yellow with Black accents and possilbly the bumblebee stripe on the back if there is enough to show. I took a few mins to look over your pics and I see I need to go back and add one more support on my hand rails. I like how your kit looks. Thanks for the compliment. I have to have imagination, I don't have the bank account to just order everything I see in the catalogs. I have learned over the years that Imagination is much Cheaper...... of course my wife will disagree. |

Re: My Melex
Ask and you shall recieve Mr. New Guy.
Got back at it today and really made some head way. first thing out was the Tail lights. I removed the rear seat kit and cut out the tail light openings, the tails I ordered came with both a chrome bezel and a rubber one. I wasn't sure which to use so I place one of each in and started contemplating. I believe I will go with the Chrome ones. Since I was in a light mode, I decided to open up the headlight buckets and mock up the head lights. First thing I did was measure the lip of the head light and then transfered that lip to the headlight bucket for proper fit I then broke out the cut off wheel again and opened up the holes. Once the that was done I mocked up the head lights. Next up the marker / turn signal lights. I got them out and marked up the top of the bucket to find the center lignt and once I found a location I liked, I traced out the light base and the mounting holes and wire harness holes. I drilled out the holes Then test fit the lights. Here's the mocked up light set up. I did get some more stuff yesterday, Like my turnsignal unit. it's mounted and ready to be wired. got a great deal on this one, 9.95 on ebay. Started to now bolt down the back seat assembly and the back bumper. I then clamped on the hand rails to see where to put the mount points on the fender and the sides of the step bumper. Here is a shot of the side as it sat before I welded up the hand rails. More to come as I get more finished. |
