Running Light vs. Brake Light?
Hey everyone. I'm still working around edges of my brake light/ turn signal project. But to make sure I have a real brake light:
The LED lamps are uniform across the PCB, and have 3 wires to the connector. Touching the unplugged connector with a 9v battery, 2 leads will run them dim, similar to running lights with the lights on. However, I am unable to make the LEDs work using the third lead in any combination (unless I missed a combination?) |

Re: Running Light vs. Brake Light?
The negative and one of the positives should be the "dimmer leds".
The same negative and the other positive should be the "bright leds". |

Re: Running Light vs. Brake Light?
What tail lamps do you have?
Mine have one common, and the other 3 are tail, brake, reverse. |

Do the brights run off the same 12V? The all appeared uniformly dim on 9V. Maybe I missed the correct combo. Let me try again tonight. |

Re: Running Light vs. Brake Light?
You'll need more than a 9V battery to see the difference. The brake light circuit of each LED tail light unit draws more current than a typical 9V battery can deliver. You must have enough voltage/current for LEDs to reach threshold and light up. The tail light circuit has a lower voltage/current threshold. Use 12 volts to see the difference.

Re: Running Light vs. Brake Light?
I was wondering what all this 9v business was all about.

Re: Running Light vs. Brake Light?
It was so I could easily probe the connector with short leads.
OK, the are indeed 2 circuits there, one for running light, and I assume one for the brake light; I had erroneously configured my test setup with the supply wire as the common. Duh. According the the accessory schematic, this 3-wire setup should be able to function with a turn signal as the turn signal assembly routes the brake light on the load side of the brake relay and turn signal. Is this correct? As seen in the pics, there is a wire harness with the 9-pin plug as well as some other harness which I believe is/was for horn, etc. The wire colors do not match the schematic I have. Is this an ezgo product? There is a 9 pin white connector in the dash. The other half of the connector harness is present as well. To run the headlights from a dash switch, the switch is connected to the two professionally crimped female crimp connectors on the right of the small accessory harness, drawing power from RED crimp-connector then RED/WHITE back up the second harness to main harness, then distro to the right/left via two R/W splices into the R/W on main harness, and the two WHITE commons spliced into the WHITE main harness wire. The Yellow arrows indicate harnesses to the left and right headlights, each of which have 3 wire connectors for the lamp and turn signal. There is likely a wire in there somewhere that will power the brake lights post-relay, and it's dawned on me as I type that I haven't traced it out (with unplugged controller of course). Perhaps this isn't so bad. I simply don't have a schematic that accounts for all the wires and their routing. Any guidance about this setup is appreciated.
