1996 ezgo shutting down
I just bought my first electric 1996 ez go golf cart, and after I am riding on it for about 8 mins or so it will just shut off and coast to a stop. If I wait about 2 mins or so the golf cart will drive when I push the peddle again but only for about 100 yards and it will shut down again. Also while this goes on I can hear a loud buzz vibration in the back of the cart and it starts to get real sluggish right before it shuts off then l. If I let the cart sit for a few hours it will drive completely smooth for a few mins then it will happen all over again. All of the batteries are brand new also. Does anyone have any quick advice on what this problem is? Any info will be very helpful to me because I have never owned a golf cart before and i got this for my sons birthday so I want to have it running proper before he gets it.
Thanks in advance, Mark |

Welcome to bgw
It sounds to me that your cart is going into thermal shutdown. The battery pack has about 100 minutes of actual run time, If your batteries are old you may be getting into a low voltage situation which will increase the amperage draw and might be producing the extra heat in the controller. |

In addition, they have to be broken in properly to get maximum storage capacity. Read this, and while your are on the website, read everything with the word "battery" in title. Lots of good info for a new cart owner. (New to carts that is) http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Batter...n_Methods.html |

Re: 1996 ezgo shutting down
Hey guys thanks for all the detailed replies, and yeah the batteries are like 1 or 2 months old, so they have only been completley recharged approx 10 times I think since I have had it, but here is the question again if it was the battery how would it ride completley fine for 8 mins or so.... then shut itself off, then a few mins later run again just fine without a charge inbetween then shut off after 3 mins??? could it be the motor? or controller burning out and overheating then shutting down to protect itself??

That is what it is doing ... thermal shut down. It will continue to do this more often until one time it won't come back on at all... you need a new controller, why not look at an upgrade, the cost is the same sometimes less. |
