Default 2004 Precedent solenoid resistor question..

What is the point of the resistor between the two big posts on the solenoid? I had one fry on me the other day and then the HW failsafe fault was triggered in the controller which lead to me replacing it. After I replaced it I didn't install a resistor back and its running just fine...so what's the point of the resistor? Thanks in advance

It's there to allow the capacitors in the controller to get enough energy to charge prior to the solenoid closing. If the resistor is no there, the solenoid contacts will arc and burn every time the solenoid closes and will eventually damage the solenoid.
Typically the only reason the resistor burns out is the controller has failed internally or there is a short in the motor.
Since you replaced the controller, check the motor for continuity to the case from the A1/2 and F1/2 posts.
As long as that checks out you should be fine to install a new resistor and not have any more problems.

what about the direction of it? Does that matter which direction it's installed in?

No...It doesn't matter which way the resistor goes...The diode on the small terminals is directional...Stripe towards positive post...
