83 gas EZGO: engine turns over but won't fire
I have a 1983 EZGO gas powered, robin 2pg engine, golf cart.
The cart was driven across the yard and stopped. When I got back into the cart, the engine would not fire. My problem: the generator turns the engine over, but the engine will not fire. I’ve checked the electrical system, installed a new pulsar coil (coil is installed correctly, red and blue wires are properly attached – there is a 40 degree timing error if they are reversed), igniter is working (replaced and tested). Spark plug coil is working (measured). I have spark at the plug (seems good). Checked timing, it is good. Tested solenoid, as per the manual – seems to be working as the generator engages when foot throttle engaged. There is cylinder compression. I just cannot get it to fire. Any ideas that might help would be greatly appreciated. |

To replace the pulsar, you had to remove the flywheel. Half a step farther, and you probably would have fixed it by replacing the crankshaft seals.
Before tearing into it again, take the fuel pump apart to check for ripped diaphragms, and crud. What is the compression? |

Spray some gas into the intake and see if it pops.
If it does not Pull the plug immediately after and see if it is getting wet with fuel. If it is not i bet you have blown crank seals. If it pops and tries to start when you spray a little fuel in there then you have a carb of fuel delivery issue. Pull the fuel line at the carb and place it into a bottle and crank it over. Should get fuel out of the pump. |

Is there any visual evidence to look for to confirm blown crank seals? If so, what?
Other than old age, what circumstances may cause crank seals to fail? Any advice or insight into crank seal replacement would be appreciated. Thanks! |

You can take carb cleaned and spray around the crank seals while cranking over, if it tries to start, you know that's your problem. Replacement is straight forward-not that hard.

A good backfire will pop them out.
If they are just worn, it will sometimes run in reverse, and not forward. Use loc-tite, and stake in the new ones. I used green. |
