Buddy, I'm just a nasty ole G8'er! And I don't know nothin about G1's.
About the only thing I could tell you is, to read this site, and the owners manual and do all the maint. you can on your car. When it is running good, then you can start moding it. The people on here are good, so read what they have to say! The big key to a good running car is maintenance! The fact that you even knew there was a bushing in the carb. tells me your savvy, and know what your doing!! You just need knowledge, and your abilities will take over! G1's are one of the best carts out there, so you have a good base to work from!! PS, Sho knows quite abit about them. Chase him down! |

I did this fix on my 86 g1, had a lot of play in the shaft. It took my like 5 or 6 tries slotting and trying to get the bushing to fit right so the shaft would move without resistance. I used a die grinder and cutting wheel to slot it, i had to make the bushing thinner so it would seal properly but after a few tries it works perfectly. Thanks for the fix!

How To REALLY Fix your old G1 carb!
Here we are again. It has been about two years since I posted this thread. I have been having to do some serious work on my old '82 and it is all spread out in its respective parts right now so I have been looking at some other things I have just lived with.
When I installed the slotted bushing, it did take almost all the wobble out of the Throttle Shaft, but it still allowed a pretty good little hole to suck air into the carb. So I though I would improve on the design of my little project. I wanted a solid bushing. 1. In the first picture is the disassembled throttle shaft hole, the old slotted bushing, and what would become the new solid bushing. 2. In the second picture is the screws that held the throttle plate in place. My Throttle Shaft has had a hard life, and it was all I could do to get the old screws out. The top one came out just fine, but the bottom one would not budge! I had buggered it up a bit before I got a soldier iron out and heated that sucker up. I was able to break it free after that. The screws on the right are from an old B&G carb off of a generator. Thank goodness they fit just fine! You have to tool the Throttle Shaft a bit
The first picture shows how the new bushing does not fit onto the Throttle Shaft. So it was off to the bench grinder. The Throttle Shaft is made from brass so I just kissed the grinding wheel to knock an edge off (I am pointing at the edge with a screwdriver). Really, using a bench grinder on a brass shaft is akin to putting in thumb tacks with a 2lb sledge. You don't need the grinder. Just get a small fine file and tool the shaft until the bushing slides on. I ended up taking a little off of each side of the flat part of the shaft. Go really easy filing the Throttle Shaft. You cannot put it back on once you file it off. Once you can get the bushing past the flat, you will be in good shape.
You will need to flare the end of the bushing a bit before it will slide on. I used a regular old nail punch to flare the small end. In the picture (from left to right): rubber piece that fits on the bottom of the shaft, old slotted bushing, new non-flared bushing, Flared bushing. The bushing on the nail punch flared alright, but I buggered up the top a bit so I saved it to crimp on some ground wires one day. |

After all that, your new bushing should fit onto the Throttle Shaft. Do a test fit in the carb. You should be getting close now.
