Vertical Shaft 14 hp Briggs
I have an EZGO 36 volt marathon that the motor and controller burnt up at the same time... I have an old Craftsman mower at the house that needs deck work... my question is this... what options do i have to mount this vert shaft on my marathon and make it work??? has anyone ever done this kind of thing??? I have searched th web and cant find any documentaion or pics or anything like that, I am using it as a class project for my students to work on... any help that could point us in the right direction would be awesome.... stuff like the wiring, the rear diff, the engine mounting, clutches, chain, whatever it may be let me hear them thanks

Re: Vertical Shaft 14 hp Briggs
The vertical shaft engine will pose some very difficult problems, they can be worked around. we did put a man on the moon. It would require changing the path and adapting to the rear end and in the end you won't have reverse.

Re: Vertical Shaft 14 hp Briggs
I was given a free 17 HP briggs verticle shaft motor. I researched this site with all the great craftsman on it. I went as far as getting a 90 degree gearbox from E-bay. I figured how bad can it be gotta be able to figure it out. Well after a ton of research and fiddling around with belts gearboxes and even looking into running the motor in a horizontal fashion and changing how the oil delivery system will work I trashed the whole idea. To be honest if someone was to figure an effective and cheap way to do this it would be great but I found it to be WAY too much trouble for what it is worth!! Do what I did and you will be happier in the long run. Sell the motor on craigs list or E-Bay. Mine sold quickly. You can find reasonably priced horizontal shaft brigs motors all over the place at reasonable prices. Go with the horizontal shaft its easy and fun to build. Plus all the wealth of info on this site makes it a breeze!!! Just my two cents!!!

Re: Vertical Shaft 14 hp Briggs
The verts are cheap, sometimes I wish someone could build a trans with the shaft out the top lol.
You could do it but it would be work and could have problems. You can change axis with a twisted belt like lawmowers do, but belts can slip, you would still need a jackshaft for the clutch. Without a cvt is not a good idea you really need it to make the cart run nice. I've seen people put a sprocket on the trans and run gokart clutch you end up with one gear thats it. |
