Re: 87 ezgo/ hei done now it overheats
When this happens, is the ignition module pretty hot? Also, did you run a ground wire directly from the battery to the ignition module?
What plug are you using, and what is the gap set to? |

Did you cut the nub from the back of the module and use the heat sink compound on the back. The module might be getting hot.

The reason I asked about the spark plug type and gap is that you may be experiencing pre-ignition as the plug heats up. Open the gap to .045". If the problem persists, try a plug that is 2-3 heat ranges cooler(higher number NGK). |

Re: 87 ezgo/ hei done now it overheats
I do not see any ground running from the battery to the module. We've got 5 wires coming off it. 1 to the solenoid, 1 to the coil, 2 to the pulser and 1 attached to the screw going to the voltage regulator...did we miss something in the instructions?
The module sits flush but I do not recall trimming anything. |

No, you didn't miss anything. The wiring is correct. The wire from the mounting screw to the regulator is the ground.
Did you check to see what the plug gap is set to? |

Re: 87 ezgo/ hei done now it overheats
The plug was set at 0.032 but we have now changed to 0.045.
I think part of our problem is that the fuel pump may not be working correctly. Even though we replaced the fuel lines and filters, we did not replace the pump and it is leaking at both the pump and carb. We're going to go ahead and purchase a new pump and see if that helps although I'm not sure that it is the cause of the overheating. Any input on that? |

The overheating would be caused by the pre–ignition.

What fuel/oil mix ratio are you running?

Re: 87 ezgo/ hei done now it overheats
Don't know the ratio but it was 1.5 oz oil to 1 gallon of fuel.
We're going to have to wait until we put the new pump in to see if the over heating issue is remedied. Will keep you updated. Thanks for the input! |

Re: 87 ezgo/ hei done now it overheats
If you weren't getting fuel, causing it to run lean and heat up, the plug would not be black. If you are using an NGK BR5 plug, switch to a BR8 and gap it to .045". The tip of the plug will get quite a bit hotter with the HEI ignition. Once it gets hot enough, it can ignite the fuel without even sparking. It is likely getting hot enough to ignite the fuel way before the spark comes in, as the piston is rising and building pressure. A $3 plug is a much cheaper test than a $30 pump.
I've had this happen on a 3pg motor. I even pulled the plug wire and it wouldn't stop running. I had to snuff out the intake. |
