Default Broke camshaft/crankshaft teeth

Strange, yesterday I broke almost all the teeth on my camshaft and crankshaft...

The cylinder/rings were ok and did not block anything and I cannot explain the reason. Did it already happened to someone ?

Can't help with the why, but if it's a G16 engine, I've got all of the innards.

For something like that to happen, something would have to bind, and hard. Did the connecting rod survive? is the camshaft or anything else seized? any signs of scoring on the rod, crank, cam, or anywhere else?

Nothing else broke or even was damaged inside the crankcase (connecting rod, weight, etc...). I was afraid the rings would have blocked the piston, or so but same when I opened the head, all was ok.

I am really surprised as this engine is almost 20 years.

It is true I have the high speed gear (8:1), and was asking myself if the engine is able to really support it. But it was installed more than a year ago and I use this cart every day...

Anyway I shall change all and go to +0.25 as it is still standard. Time to switch from synthetic based to full synthetic oil

Remove everything and inspect closely for any signs of scoring anywhere. Something had to bind up to cause that kind of damage. Only other thing that I could think of, though unlikely, is the gears themselves just wore out to the point they bound up themselves.

I'd double check all of the bearings too. I just don't like to rebuild without finding the root cause of failure, or it tends to come back and bite you again.

I totally agree!

...reason why I started this thread.

This being said, I shall closely check all parts when I shall remove all.

Good luck. LEt us know what you find. Pics are great also in case someone else happens to have the unfortunate experience you have, may help them in future searches!
