Default 1990 Yamaha G8 not firing

I have recently rebuilt my J38 motor in my '90 G8 (new rings, rod bearings and gaskets). Now that I have it all put back together, it does not want to fire. Spark plug is sparking and the carb is getting gas. I took the crank case cover off again to double-check the timing marks and they are lined up. What am I missing?? I believe the valves should be adjusted to 0.1 mm which is what they are measuring.

Hmmm

compression
fuel
air
spark

It should fire.

Try getting it going with ether. Did you clean the carb really well? What color is the spark?

Also, is the fuel fresh? I had an issue recently and drained the fuel, found water in the bottom of the tank. Drained and refilled with fresh, boom fired right up.

I had these same symptoms on my G22. It turned out that the spark plug cap on the end of the coil wire was bad.

Not sure what the issue was but I’ve gotten it to fire. It seems like some issue with the coil or something affecting the spark because when it’s at half throttle, it sparks an when you press the pedal all the way down, it stops sparking. Also, what are the red and green wires coming out of the S/G? I unplugged the red wire and now it will fire and run smooth. Also I believe that part of the issue is my solenoid is going out.

If you give the cart half throttle, the plug will spark but if you give it full throttle, it will not spark...was this what you were experiencing?
